Winning 8 Tour de France Victories Wasn't An Accident
Dr Jeff Spencer and I
2005 Final Stage Tour de France

Dear Colleague,

The elements of chiropractic success are necessary, numerous, and mastered in independent parts by varied individuals. I have launched a major initiative called STEP UP with 2 main objectives:

  1. Bring a key element of chiropractic success by a true master to you on a monthly basis via a teleseminar.
  2. Raise money for the Foundation for Chiropractic Progress (FCP) whose non-profit mission is critical to the future of this profession.

STEP UP kicks off with the legendary Dr. Jeff Spencer...the doctor behind Lance Armstrong winning 8 Tour de France victories. Dr. Spencer is a dear personal friend and trust me when I tell you, he is in a league of his own. No other chiropractor has as powerful a context or grip on performance, winning, and chiropractic. I am convinced that when you come to this teleseminar and listen with focus, you will be different the moment you hang up the phone. Below are the particulars:

Event title:   Winning 8 Tour de France Victories Wasn't An Accident.
When:   Tuesday, March 15th at 2:00 PM EST.
Length:   45 minutes
Price:   $20 tax deductible donation to the Foundation for Chiropractic Progress (FCP)

This message is being sent to the majority of the profession and space on the line is truly limited so register now. 20 bucks to a great cause and a brightened headspace for you - go for it!

FOUNDATION HAS SUBSTANTIAL IMPACT BEFORE AND DURING NATIONAL LEGISLATIVE CONFERENCE

*Monday, 2.14.11, the day prior to all lobbying activities regarding the inclusion of chiropractic in the DOD and VA, the Foundation distributed to each member of Congress copies of two white papers that reinforce the cost effectiveness and efficacy of chiropractic care.

*Tuesday, the day of strong lobbying on DOD and VA issues, the Foundation placed a full page ad featuring spokesperson, Brigadier General, Rebecca Halstead (retired), who reinforced the importance of expanding chiropractic coverage in the VA and DOD.

The ad generated favorable comments from members of Congress and their staff as they greeted our lobbying doctors. Additionally, it resulted in an inquiry from a New York Times reporter, as well as a note to the General from a Congressional staff member who served under her years earlier, whom was looking to invite her to testify at a future Hearing on VA issues.

Once again, the F4CP student reps from each of the chiropractic schools were active participants. THANK YOU FCP STUDENT REPS!!

General Halstead also made her own strides in initiating strong supportive actions.

* General Halstead met with the Deputy Director of Tricare regarding the inclusion of chiropractic coverage under Tricare. While the legislation was pending, there were some small victories achieved from this meeting as the two of them explored various opportunities that could include a chiropractic presence. One hour after the meeting was completed Tricare issued an invitation to Dr. Anthony Lisi, an on staff doctor for the VA Hospital in Connecticut, to participate on the Pain Management Advisory Committee. Discussions are continuing regarding other opportunities including the Medical Home which is being established in Tricare.

Thank you Dave Obryon for setting up the meeting!

* The General met with the staff of Senator Webb, also in regards to Tricare Legislation.

* General Halstead was also able to find time to address and interact with the doctors and students attending NCLC, as well as members of the ACA House of Delegates.

FOUNDATION PARTICIPATION AT THE CHIROPRACTIC SUMMIT

* Following the NCLC, the Foundation was also represented at the Chiropractic Summit, a regularly scheduled event with the leadership in the profession. Over thirty groups were represented.

Prior to the Summit Meeting, representatives of F4CP including, Dr. Clum, Laura and Joe Carabello and Gary Cuneo, met with leadership from the ICA, ACA, ACC and COSCA to discuss the F4CP's Employer Outreach Program and the role these organizations could play.

 F4CP's Employer Outreach Program

One of the important projects of the Foundation is to reach out to the employer community regarding the benefits of chiropractic care for its employees. We are using various opportunities, including media exposure, sponsorship and attendance at key industry conferences, to communicate our message.

Provided below is a summary of the meetings we have scheduled and highlights from those which have already occurred.

Since the conference, a follow-up mail campaign has been placed into action, delivering each attendee with a package containing the valuable materials presented at the F4CP booth and the opportunity to arrange further meetings with F4CP.

IBI/NBCH Health and Productivity Forum
National Business Coalition on Health
February 28 - March 2, 2011
San Francisco, CA
The Fairmont San Francisco

The Foundation representatives attended a five day conference in San Francisco where speaker after speaker addressed the new direction corporations are taking in managing the health needs of their employees. The new emphasis is on providing incentives and opportunities to their employees to stay healthy; a healthy employee is a more productive one.

There is a growing movement in which corporations are hiring their own health providers and in some instances establishing an on-site health clinic for employees. One such health clinic is at CISCO Corporation, where a doctor of chiropractic is on staff.

For more information regarding the CISCO experience and additional opportunities, please see article written by Dr Bill Meeker. View Article

The Foundation had an opportunity to share this information, along with its cost effective reports to many of the 400 plus representatives of employer groups and associated vendors.

This forum gave us further insight on how to better focus our message to the employer community and take advantage of the new direction many corporations are choosing to take. Look to next month's Newsletter for our specific plans.

FOUNDATION RESPONDS TO RELEVENT MEDIA STORIES

Within the past month, there has been a multitude of media opportunities for F4CP spokesperson, Brigadier General, Rebecca Halstead (retired), to share her response regarding the significance and value of chiropractic care as a recognized treatment option.

Below is a list of editorial pieces submitted and the initial articles that provoked a response.

*Letter to the Editor, TIME Magazine -
TIME's 3.7.11 issue entitled, "Understanding Pain", focused on the scope of chronic pain and accommodating treatment methods. General Halstead specifically responded to TIME's citing of fibromyalgia with no reference to chiropractic care.

*Letter to the Editor Seattle Times and Sacramento Bee -
Hal Bernton's feature, "Weight of the War" (2.12.2011), addressed the issue of military burdens and prescriptions as an undesirable coping method. General Halstead shared her story of battling the stressors of the military, while simultaneously fighting fibromyalgia and its prescribed medication's side effects.

All responses share an incredible account and we hope to see them published in the near future.
